Master of the Japanese yakuza film genre, Kōsaku Yamashita was born in 1923 in Fukuoka, Japan. He was active in the film industry from 1952 to 1998, primarily directing in the yakuza and jidaigeki genres, with his most notable works including "Red Peony Gambler" series and "Tattooed Life".
